How Do You Keep Music Appropriate at a School Dance?

Planning an elementary or middle school dance is exciting—but one of the biggest concerns for PTAs and school staff is always the same:

“How do we keep the music school-appropriate?”

As a Charlotte-based school dance DJ with nearly two decades of experience, I work closely with schools across North Carolina to create fun, high-energy events that stay age-appropriate and stress-free for staff and families. Here are proven strategies to help you confidently manage music at your next school dance.

Clean Edit Doesn’t Always Mean Appropriate

One of the most important things to understand is this:

“Clean edit” or “radio edit” means language has been removed — not content.

Many popular songs don’t include profanity but still reference mature themes that may not be appropriate for elementary or middle school students. As a professional DJ, I listen to popular radio daily so I know exactly what the radio version removes—and what it leaves in.

When in doubt, always remember: no bad words doesn’t automatically mean kid-friendly.

When You’re Unsure, Google the Lyrics

If a song title or artist raises even a small red flag, Google the lyrics before approving it.

A quick search can reveal context that isn’t obvious from a short clip or chorus. This simple step can prevent awkward moments on the dance floor—and unhappy phone calls afterward.

Always Have Backup Songs Ready

Students love requesting songs by popular artists, but not every hit is school-appropriate.

For example:

If a student requests “Tears” by Sabrina Carpenter (definitely not appropriate for school), I might suggest “Feather” instead—same artist, similar vibe, much safer content.

An experienced school DJ will always have clean, approved alternatives ready to go.

Collect Song Requests

Before

 the Dance

Instead of allowing students to request songs during the event, have them submit requests a week in advance.

This allows your DJ to:

  • Review all requests

  • Build an approved playlist

  • Remove songs that don’t align with school guidelines

This one change alone dramatically reduces problems during the dance.

Turn Song Requests Into a Fundraiser

Here’s a PTA favorite:

💡 Charge $1 per song request when students submit their requests ahead of time.

Why it works:

  • Raises money for your school

  • Encourages thoughtful requests

  • Students are far less likely to waste money on inappropriate songs

It’s a win-win: better music and extra fundraising.

Don’t Take “I Promise It’s Clean” at Face Value

When a student says, “I promise, it’s clean,” take it with caution.

Two important reasons:

  1. Students may think a song is clean because there are no curse words—even if the meaning is mature.

  2. Sometimes… they’re just hoping the adults won’t notice.

That’s why having a pre-approved playlist is so important.

Ask Your DJ About Trending Songs

A professional school DJ should know what’s currently popular with kids—and which songs may require a judgment call.

For example, last year “Pink Pony Club” was hugely popular with elementary school girls.

Some schools felt the song’s underlying meaning wasn’t appropriate, while others felt students were simply enjoying the melody without understanding the context.

There’s no single right answer—it depends on your school community.

Communicate Your School’s Values Clearly

Every school is different.

A private or church-sponsored school may have stricter guidelines than a public school with a more relaxed philosophy. Communicate these expectations clearly to your DJ ahead of time so they can curate music that aligns with your values.

Clear communication leads to smoother events.
